Write a story

I just stepped off the train, and the heat is unbearable. Before I left my apartment, it was already at 90. That was at 5:45 this morning.

Now, it is the end of the day, and I am stopping to grab a drink with a friend. They are visiting the city, so I have meet them up in a place I normally don't go to. Well, except for work.

The heat is so intense, taking the train was easier than walking. I would normally walk but this would have been too much of an exercise.

Michael Phelps would have been jealous of how soaked I would be.

So, I am in the Loop, walking underneath the L and heading toward Miller's. He wants to meet there, as we have been there before, and he liked the martinis.

As I stroll, the L passes over, and it is loud but I zone out, after hearing it countless times. Then it hits me.

The sun cuts through the columns of concrete and steal giants. I actually stop, long enough for a homeless to approach me.

"Spare some change, sir?"

I am one of those who ignore the homeless and their pleas. However, the light changes my attitude.

I reach in my pocket. A $5 left over from lunch.

"Here you go."

"Thank you!"

"No problem."

I continue walking, heading to my destination, and the sun continues to knock on my peripheral, reminding me to never forget that evening light.
